10 Easy + Cost Efficient Eco Swaps for Sustainable Living

The 51st celebration of Earth Day is approaching and, in appreciation for all that Mother Earth provides us, we’ve compiled a list of our 10 favorite simple and sustainable swaps that are not only affordable and easy to implement in your day-to-day life, but will reduce your waste and single-use plastic footprint to leave a lasting impact on the Earth and your wallet.

*Disclaimer: The pricing in this post are estimates and may differ from product to product and location.

1. Beeswax wrap instead of plastic wrap

Each beeswax wrap lasts for up to 200 uses or about up to 1 year of use.

2. Dryer balls instead of dryer sheets

Each dryer ball lasts for up to 1,000 loads of laundry or about 2-3 years. Buying a pack of 3 dryer balls can last you up to 6-9 years worth of laundry!

3. Shampoo/conditioner bars instead of bottled ones

Solid shampoo and conditioner bars can last for 6-12 months longer than bottled products.

4. Menstrual cups or period undies instead of tampons or pads

Menstrual cups can last for up to 10 years with proper care while period undies can be used for up to 2-5 years. The average person with a menstrual cycle spends anywhere from $50-120 per year on tampons/pads. Switching to a $30 menstrual cup could save you between $470-$1,170 over the span of ten years! Likewise, with period undies, if you invest in Thinx’s $65 starter set, you could save between $185-$430 over the span of 5 years.

5. Reusable water bottles instead of plastic bottles

If you’re like the average American who spends approximately $5 per week on bottled water, switching to a $25 reusable water bottle would save you up to $235 per year and keep an average of 167 plastic water bottles out of landfills.

6. Metal or bamboo straws instead of plastic straws

Reusable metal or bamboo straws are perfect for use around the house or bringing with you to your favorite restaurants.

7. Canvas bags instead of plastic grocery bags

Switching to reusable grocery bags can save up to 1,500 plastic grocery bags from ending up in our oceans and landfills per person, per year!

8. Reusable cotton rounds instead of makeup wipes

About 730 makeup wipes are used by the average makeup wearer per year and take up to a staggering 100 years to decompose. According to the Face Halo website, their makeup remover rounds replace up to 500 single-use makeup wipes. By purchasing a pack of 3 makeup remover rounds (which are up-cycled by the way!), you’ll be saving just under 3 years of makeup wipes going into landfills. Plus, with the average makeup wearer spending around $95 per year, switching to reusable makeup remove round can save up to $260 over the span of 3 years.

9. Washable dishrags or bamboo towels instead of paper towels( Sustainable Living )

Bamboo products are an eco-friendly alternative to their paper counterparts because bamboo is a fast-growing natural plant that is fully biodegradable. You can even shop bamboo toilet paper to double your impact!

10. Bamboo toothbrushes instead of plastic toothbrushes

Did you know that plastic toothbrushes can take up to 1,000 years to decompose? And with dentists recommending switching out your toothbrush once every 3-4 months, the average person will use up to 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime. And for the same reasons we mentioned above, switching to bamboo toothbrushes is a great eco-friendly alternative.

Sustainable Living

Switching to an eco-friendly lifestyle takes time, but making even the smallest change with one of the above suggestions will make an impact on not only the Earth but your wallet, too!
