The 3 Things You Need to Master in Photography

Like any art form, good photography is subjective. Whether you went to school for photography or are self taught, one thing is for sure: a knowledge and master of the basics is important.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about the 3 things you need to master in photography to capture a great photo.

1. Lighting

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”

George Eastman, founder of Kodak

Lighting is an incredibly important element to photography. So much so, that the word photography actually stems from Greek roots, meaning “writing with light.”

Lighting can be a fickle thing to master. This is especially true if you’re shooting in natural light. In order to master light, you need to study and understand it well enough to work with it in under any conditions. From warm, golden hour light to stark, midday sun to to cloudy, moody skies – the type of lighting you work with can drastically change the visual and emotional aspects of an image. When you learn to work with light, you’ll have more control over the tone, mood, and atmosphere of your subject.

Whether you’re shooting in natural or man-made light, there are 3 key components that affect the overall outcome of your photo: position, soft vs. hard light, and temperature. When it comes to positioning, backlighting aids in silhouetted shots, side lighting creates shadows and depth, and front lighting brings out all of the details in your subject. Harsh lighting casts stark shadows, which adds a sense of dramatization unseen in images with soft lighting. And temperature can either exude more negative emotions with the use of cool lighting or emit soft, cozy feelings with warm light.

2. Composition

While you most likely have heard of The Rule of Thirds, there’s so much more that goes into the composition of an image than lining it up along grid lines. Composition takes into account shapes, forms, lines, texture, color, symmetry, perspective, movement, and so much more. All of these elements, whether you choose to incorporate just a few or more, and the way that they are arranged in your frame help you establish visual balance, draw attention to your subject, tell a story, or exude an emotion.

While finding the right composition can take some practice, this is where creativity comes in to play. For example, anyone can visit Paris and take a picture of the Eiffel Tower. It’s what you do with your camera and composition that sets you apart.

3. Now for the fun part – editing!

Whether you’re shooting on a digital camera or your iPhone, it’s safe to say that the images taken tend to look dull and lackluster, unlike the original scene. Editing helps to bring back that vibrance and beauty. But sometimes, editing can be overwhelming. It’s hard to figure out how you want to edit your photos, and even harder to figure out which settings will get you there and create a consistent look each time.
